I thinkjipjip got it right (except I don't know what a chook is).
Chickens are farm animals. I guess some people think of them as pets.
Of course, we should minimize anything that would resemble torture (because that makes us sick), but when it is time for one to die, that is our responsibility. As others point out, attempting to delay that wastes our time, and does the animal little good.
On the other hand, if you want to treat a special rabbit, chicken, or duck, or cow, or pig, or sheep as a pet, that should be okay, too.
The "green" or thrift crowd would probably had you recycle via compost or other means, but that is not practical for some people based on where they live.
