Hello I have two button quail one boy and one girl I need to know if I should let them breed and do the females really only live 18 months thanks

Hi there, we had buttons a few years ago and I'm fairly sure we had them all into their 3rd year at least, I'm sure they lived longer than 18 months. Of course it depends how you keep them, and whether they get a winter break in laying (ours were kept outside and did). As regards to letting them breed, buttons are more likely to sit on eggs than coturnix, so it's possible that if you just stopped collecting eggs the hen would sit, however ours never did, so you might need an incubator. The biggest thing to consider about breeding them is what to do with the babies, especially the males, and how you're going to keep them. The babies are the size of bumblebees, and you need TINY mesh to keep them in and safe from predators if they live outside. No-one can really tell you whether you should or shouldn't breed them, it's something you'd need to carefully consider. There's no point hatching out loads of cute chicks that you can't keep and no-one will want once they grow adult feathers, but if you have some friends who want some it might be worth it, or if you have the space to keep them yourself.
