how do I calculate how much wire I will need?

take the area of each side of the coop, and then allow ~10% overage for mistakes and waste.

10x5.5= 55
10x5 = 50
6x5.5 = 33
6x5.5 = 33

that’s 171 sqft of hardware cloth.

add on 10%, which is another 17sqft, but round up to 20 for good measure and you’re at 191sqft of hardware cloth, before considering a dig apron.

at some point, you’re gonna have to do some of this for yourself.

if you buy a 48 inch by 50ft roll, that should be enough.

that’s great that you’ve figured out all the costs, but you should expect to go over budget, especially with this being the first time you’ve built something.

it sounds like a fun project. i’m looking forward to seeing it come to life !

I recently built an 8' x 4' run for 2 chickens. I used six 4ft u-posts, six 2x4s, 25' of hardware cloth, and two 8' panels of fiberglass roofing. I spent close to $150. Maybe materials are cheaper where you are, but I think you've underestimated. I'd just assume it's going to be more expensive than your estimate (isn't that always the case?) so that you're prepared for any hiccups.

I much prefer flat roofs! slanted roof would be weird since one side is 5 ft. and the overhangs would be near the ground. anyone who has a flat roof and gets snow let me know.
