Here it is day 22 and the DD and I are running around to get a brooder ready as I thought the teens would be out by now! I rescued some chicks after I set some in the bator! But they are not ready and I have 5 out of 19 peeping and 1 hole in each egg so far! Im not sure if I will be able to sleep but this one has been peeping all day long! Will they be ok if they come out while I sleep?

They will be fine. Let them do what they know to do. Chickens have been getting out of eggs for a kazillion years with out our help. Go to bed, and you will wake up to an incubator full of fuzzy butts...like Christmas in April!

Yes they can technically be in the incubator for up to 3 days without problem. They should be in there about 12 hours or so until they are dry and fluffed up anyway so overnight will not be a problem. They won't need food or water right away because they just absorbed their yolk, that will sustain them.

Mine were just fine. It was like Christmas morning. I came out and found two!

mmaddie's mom :

"Should I delay going to bed?"

the question should be "Will I even be able to lay still IF I go to bed?!?"

I keep running to the closet where they are! I called my dad on the phone he wants to be here when thy hatch I told him come early in the morning!

I hooked up my document camera to a 6 foot SmartBoard (giant screen) and we watched them hatch in class. Middle school kids were more excited than I had ever seen them before. My class was packed before, lunch and after school. We are setting again tomorrow so they will hatch at Open House. They even know what time they want the incubator to start based on last hatches mode of hatch. I teach math so I had to incorporate it in!

great idea teach!! way to expose the kids to something new, and incorporate math into it!! good idea, great job@
