I want a scovie duck, but im not sure if i should get one.

I want one as a pet, like the others, but I also want a girly to sit on the eggs that my duck likes to abandon.

So, any one have advice? If I get one, and use her for nesting purposes- do i just find her nest and slip the eggs under? or will she sit on a nest already built?

Im new to this idea , so all info is appriciated!

Well I love my Muscovys so of course I'm going to say yes lol. I had one as a pet just a couple years ago and she was wonderful. She will build her own nest. I would wait till she is sitting tight and then at night in the cover of darknes(with flashlight lol) I would then take her eggs out and put what you want under her. I wouldn't move her just reach under her. They do get protective and might hit you with her bill, but it won't hurt that bad. She will be glad and a little surprised when the eggs hatch early lol. poor muscovies have to sit on their egg for about 35 days.

Muscovies make great brooders, and most make great mothers, but the first time for them is the roughest. They tend to step on there babies the first time until they get it figured out.

Good luck,

Julie

Im used to getting pecked and slapped by protective mothers, so thats no problem

will she notice the number difference?

I would say no, but you could always leave a few of hers in and slip hers out slowly like everyother day till it's just the ones you want her to hatch. This way it's not such a big difference right away. She should cover them and get off once a day to feed and drink. You could just take one you don't want in the nest then. When she comes back she shouldn't notice the difference. Just cover them back up. I had a muscovy that covered hers and I peeked at them, well I forgot to cover them back up and she abandond the nest. too smart for her own good...

I ended up incubating them the rest of the way lol.

Go get one. I got two girls that are broody right now. One is sitting on 16 of hers and 1 of her sisters and the other one has 10 right now, she layed 12-we ate one and one is at her sisters nest. I can check my ducks nests as long as i watch my beck. If i dont i might get some sovy drake claws in my back.
