Should I grow some grass in the run?

I am building a new coop and run because the one I have now is so old and it is breaking and the wood is splitting. Should I plant some grass in the run? Maybe their poo will fertilize it? Or will the chickens just scratch it all up in a week? If not they will just have dirt. What should I do?

Chickens are very good tillers! Unless you have just a few birds and a very large run they will just turn it to dust. Maybe think about putting in some small scrubs that would provide some shade. Just don't use anything that produces poisinous berry's. I have vines growing up the back and across part of the top of 2 of my duck runs and I allow the weeds to grow up around the back side and through the wire. They seem to be much calmer since I've done this. (wood ducks & mandarins) I have a trio of Lemon Blue OE bantams in a run measuring 8 ft. x 6 ft. and it's nothing but, dirt!
