I have Muscovy ducks and chickens and the other day I found 6 very new ducklings in the barn. They seemed to have been abandoned so I set about taking care of them. A while later, one of my adult ducks came running over to them and has been taking care of them ever since. She hasn't done anything wrong so far, but she has not been a good mother in the past (she's hatched 2 other families, the first ones we left with her and found them dead in the nest a few days later, the time after that we had to separate the next batch ducklings from her as she was being far too rough with them) and she doesn't seem to be too attentive to the current ducklings. I have successfully hand-raised 11 ducklings in total over the past couple of years and am able and willing to do it again.

I am wondering if it is best to leave the ducklings with her and keep a weary on them, or if it is best to separate them now and hand-raise them myself.

Advice?
Thanks!!

It's so much easier when the mother does all of the work. I would be tempted to leave them with her, but would keep a really close eye on her.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but every time I have a poor parent bird I do not see improvement with each attempt at breeding; take the ducklings away from this hen and raise them yourself.
