Should I let a hen hatch eggs in Dec?

Do you guys think that a wire rabbit cage would offer enough protection from the other birds if put in a corner of the coop? Or would the other birds peck thru at the new babies?

but what about the weather? Could baby chicks survive in a coop? what if it was unheated? would the mama hen keep them warm enough? I don't think that in colder climates the little things would survive, i think they'd turn into chicksicles!

Mom will keep them warm, mine have set all year round. Its been below freezing and no extra heat just the hen.

Yes a small rabbit cage would be protection enough, the chickens will not actively pursue chicks, like a dog or coon, but if they happen to run past they are fair game.
