Should I move my hatched chicks from the incubator yet?

Hi everyone!

I just hatched my first batch of chicks EVER this month. I used the styrofoam hovabator with fan and auto egg turner. All went really well, honestly. I put in 14 eggs. Candling at day 10 showed that just 1 egg had stopped developing and had a blood ring. I tossed that one (sadly) and continued on. At the very end of day 18 as day 19 began, we went into lockdown. Hatching began about halfway through day 20 and continued on through the midway point of day 21 (today). So far, 11 of the remaining 13 eggs have hatched. 1 is pipped but not hatched. 1 is doing nothing yet.

The oldest chick is up to 31 hours in the incubator. I know they can make it another day and a half in there. I guess I'm getting anxious or nervous for them? Maybe feeling bad because they sound bored in there? Plus the older chicks are walking all over the younger ones...banging into the two remaining unhatched eggs (I know, it's normal, but ugh).

Should I move them? I was thinking about giving that pipped egg through to this evening. It pipped this morning...but maybe I should wait until morning and then see where we are? I don't want to mess anything up for those two remaining eggs but I also don't want to leave the hatched chicks in the bator longer than necessary. What should I do? Seasoned hatchers, what would YOU do?

Thank you!

One more thing to add- Do you think the humidity is still okay in there considering I haven't been able to add any water since lockdown started Monday afternoon? The water level is looking low. So moving them tonight would give me a chance to add water and a hot, wet paper towel to the incubator for the remaining two eggs.

At 31 hours for the first chick and with only a pip in one of the other eggs I would move the chicks to the brooder. I'm in general a hands off hatcher and usually wait until hatch is complete but if the incubator is looking full I will quickly but carefully move hatched chicks out.

Congratulations on your new chicks!

Thank you!! I've been feeling like I definitely should move them but didn't want to cause issues. I'll get some extra hands to help me move them quickly once it's opened. Then I can get pics of the new babies!!! <3

I get help too! They lift the lid and stop them jumping out and I move the chicks to the brooder :D It's just like a little production line!

I'm sure things will be fine, I moved hatched ones at the weekend (8) and the other 8 eggs remaining hatched fine even though I had opened the incubator.
As always there is the risk of shrink wrapping but only a risk, there is no way to tell for sure that it will happen. I've never had it happen and some people constantly open their incubators during hatch with no ill effects.

I moved all the ones that were born yesterday and it went well! There are still four that were born overnight and into this morning that are in the incubator. 2 eggs are also still in there. I could have sworn the one was pipped but I checked it quick when I opened the incubator and it's not. At least they aren't likely to get shrink wrapped.

Thanks for the advice!

Your babies are adorable!!! Thanks for sharing them!

Sadly one of our babies born today passed away. I looked him over after removing him from the incubator quickly and it looks to me like he didn't fully absorb his yolk sac. :(

It's a personal decision. I move mine as they become active in the bator. About the only time they spend extended periods in the bator is when they hatch at night. I'm hands on...very....hands on...lol

Hey stranger! How are you doing? How are those beautiful polish doing?

Thank you!! I've been feeling like I definitely should move them but didn't want to cause issues. I'll get some extra hands to help me move them quickly once it's opened. Then I can get pics of the new babies!!! <3

Using (adding) a wet sponge or paper towel when opening will help replenish humidity too.

Sadly one of our babies born today passed away. I looked him over after removing him from the incubator quickly and it looks to me like he didn't fully absorb his yolk sac. :(

Sorry to hear that!

I'm sorry to hear this :hugs

@AmyLynn2374

:frow I'm doing good thank you Amy and so are the polish! Hope you are too? As usual busy busy with one thing and another. Got my first hatch of the season done, 6 polish and 10 Brahma for the Easter Hatch a Long :D I have also got 2 goose eggs in the incubator at the moment on day 27 so hatch is imminent. First time at having a go at goslings and they sure are whole different ball game. I'm hoping they both hatch ok as I don't want a single gosling! Or no goslings as they sure have been much harder work than chicken eggs.
