I am ordering my chicks from mcmurray and wondering about the coccidiosis, and mareks disease vaccinations what are they for and are they worth the extra money thanks for advise

Most hatcheries do not recommend vaccinations for small backyard flocks. If you have had chickens before and had problems with Mareks then I would get any new chicks vaccinated for that. Coccidiosis can be controlled with medicated chick feed.

We generally vaccinate 400-500 at a time for Mareks. It is cheaper to do it ourselves. 1 vial treats 1,000 chicks or chickens. Is the most common mortality in young chicks. Jefferslivestock.com for poultry vaccines delivered to most states.
Coccidiosis can be transmitted from wild birds. I have received it with chicks from the hatchery and chickens from the breeder. Is best to isolate any new chicken to reduce the chance of spreading the infliction to your soil. It gets expensive treating this and most stores don't have the medicine to treat the chicks for it!

I went in on an order from MM with a few other people, and that order is supposed to be here this coming Sunday-Tuesday. We decided to do the vaccinations. For both vaccines, it was an extra .30 per chick... and we had to do all or none...we just decided to do it. I did read though you cannot feed the medicated feed if you vaccinate the chicks? I won't be.

Very eager for the chicks to come!

Ideal doesn't recommend it for most customers. I wouldn't -- I'm also trying to raise my chicks as organically as possible. It's a personal choice.
