i just got a new hen today!! yay!! i was wondering if when she starts to lay should i remove my roo? will he eat the eggs, ive known some of my roos to do so? hes never been around a broody hen or eggs and i am wanting to keep the chicks so i am wanting to save the eggs and let her sit on them. so should i move him when she starts to lay or just let them be?

Do you have just that one rooster and one hen? If so you may want to add a couple of hens or he will constantly be after that one mating her. Also you should not have a problem with him eating the eggs. Normally they won't eat them sometimes if one breaks and they figure out that eggs taste good they may get the bad habit of breaking and eating them but I have never had that problem with my roosters.

if your counting on that hen going broody, make sure it is the right breed! banties r great brooders. never had a big hen to go broody.
just reminding.

My roo loves to babysit the littleuns. Even the ones I added to the pen that I hatched myself or purchased somewhere. I had a cat break into the coop one morning. Christian (my roo) worked that cat over and the chicks spent the rest of the morning huddling around and under him. He looked so proud of 'his' children. And to think, I thought of getting rid of him. After seeing that, there's a good chance he will live out his (hopefully long) life with me.

Depends on the bird
