I'm treating for cocci. Originally bought Sulmet because it was all I could find.

I have one 3 wk old chick that got very sick so I've been hand feeding/watering. I started Sulmet 4 days ago and I only see a minimal improvement. No bloody stool anymore, though. Should I switch to Corrid? If so, how do I switch safely?

When you finish the round of Sulmet, if you don't think it's better, in a couple days, you can do five days of Corid. Corid is easier on their intestines than Sulmet since it's just a thiamine analog/blocker, a concentrated form of amprolium.

Thanks! If on Monday she isn't really improved Ill try a round of Corrid.

Never imagined I'd be coming home at lunch to feed and water a chick

Well coccidiosis has reared its ugly head again. The chick mentioned above was brooded with 11 other chicks. I thought it was suspicious that none of them came down with it--until I went out to feed everyone. Just recently they have all started with bloody diarrhea and in addition, another brooder with 11 more chicks and a broody hen are all showing the same symptoms. The strange thing is they are all showing symptoms 6 days after the first bird started.

When the first chick started showing signs I treated everyone in both brooders with Sulmet. Apparently I have a Sulmet resistant strain because by day 4 of treatment the others shouldn't have started showing symptoms. Is that a correct assumption?

I just switched everyone over to Corid and also added an electrolyte/vitamin supplement to the water. 2 other chicks are looking quite listless. I really hope I don't have more patients in the "infirmary"

This is the first time I've had to deal with coccidiosis and I HOPE it's the last

(if not I have lots of Corid lol)

IMO, Corid is far superior to Sulmet in treating it and I have seen much faster results and had less deaths using Corid.
