I have 25 isa browns and have been watching one that wont come out of the hen house very often and when she does she huddles in corners of the run and the other hens are pecking at her.

I think she is blind due to the fact that she doesn't flinch when you walk up to her and she doesn't move her head when you put your hand close to her eye. The tiny pupil area of her eye is cloudy, also. These hens are about 4 months old and are just starting to lay eggs. I have removed her and put her in her own penned area but they have pecked an area on the side of her head bloody and was wondering if I should put some blue kote on it or just leave it and let it heal on its own?

I would put something on it. With it still being fly season in most parts, you dont want anything getting in it or on it.

Poor thing is always going to be picked on like that especially in a large flock. Do you have plans for what to do with her after she heals up?

We thought about trying to put her back but if they are going to continue to pick on my poor Lilly then she gets her own private area. Right now she is by our sheep and goat. We made her her own enclosed pen due to the predators in the area. It's kinda comical because we used our dog's old igloo dog house for her, so instead of seeing a dog come out of it you see Lilly.

I will put the blue kote that we have on it then.

Thanks!!

oh yes please put something on it. be sure not to get it in her eye to (even if its the bad one). you'll need to keep her separated until she is completely healed - it might take several days. she might need some extra snacks - like some yogurt or crumbled up hard boiled egg to help boost her up for the healing process. since you have her separated you might want to try neosporin...and keep watching her.

i had a little chick that was the peckee - she was really worked over. since i had to separate her she became a favorite and got a lot of attention from me....and when i reintegrated her, she was one of the queen bees! so there is hope for her

good luck!

Blu-Kote or an antibiotic like Neosporin to help it heal and keep flies out of it. Watch not to get it in her eyes or beak area.

I will do that. I am boiling an egg right now for her.

Yes, she is already my favorite and I have been spoiling her and giving her lots of attention. When I would go into the pen she would be in the house and when I opened the door she would fall out it and come right up to me for attention. She hears my voice and starts talking back to me and trying to find me. I have been watching her for about a month now because I suspected something was wrong with her. As soon as the others started to pick on her my husband and I new we had to get her out of there. What would cause her to go blind so young???

I also would appy blue coat, and keep her un-stressed. Could her eye maybe have been pecked?

There is no signs of pecking to the eye area just the bloody spot below her ear on the top of the neck area and the top of her head on her comb. She is doing good this morning.

I made sure she could find her food and water. She is quite lively and was just talking with me. I put triple antibiotic on her and blu-kote using a q-tip and making sure not to get it into her eyes.

Thanks for all the help!!!
