Heat lamps are scarey. A regular 40 or 60 Watt light bulb would work fine suspended over a cardboard box while your chicks are small. We've used a ceramic heat bulb type lamp in our coop for 2 winters now and have had good results with keeping everyone warm in below zero temperatures, and with safety.
