i just put my 2 week old cots in their new home Amin which the food and water are on the outside of the cage. They are doing fine with the food but I am having a hard time getting them to drink. I put a few pieces of pine shaving in the water (just so they could see the water) and a few drank as they tried to get to the pine shavings. But then they quit. I am worried I am going to wake up to a bunch of dead quail. Is this dumb?

Quail, like most animals, can smell water. If they can reach it, they should be fine. I've never had a problem even when using auto watering cups or needles. I raise all my chicks with water fonts, then around 8 weeks I move them to cages that only have needle waterers piped through them. They figure the needles out in just a few minutes.

X2.... Nature will push most creatures to water. I do not dip a chicks beak in water.... never found the need!
