Should I?

Give it a try. I have a duck and they are fun to watch. It stays in the yard during the day and goes into the chicken run at night to be safe from predators. If you have a pond that is great otherwise you will need a kiddie pool or something else that will hold water because a duck needs a place to swim, splash and drink. A duck has to have a lot more water to drink than a chicken.
I have let it go. The woman didn’t respond to my messages, and I didn’t think it was a good choice.

if the duck is a female and was raised with the hens, she should be fine without another duck. However if it’s a drake, you’ll need to get other ducks and keep him away from the chickens. Drakes can kill chickens trying to mate them. Drakes have large, coiled penises and hens will be badly damaged from it (and die) if he gets ahold of them.

Again I know people do keep single ducks with chickens but in my opinion just
Being "fine" or "ok" applies to the person being fine or ok with it. Not necessarily what's best for the duck.

Sounds like the original question worked it's self out for the op. I think that's for the best. 😊

why not to keep one duck.png

I say try it . Put them together in the dark and most likely all should be fine . I chickens and duck together here . It seem like birds that wake up together in a strange place get along better.
Hi just wanted to say i found a wood duck by the side of the road and it got along great with the chickens. But it lived inside. Maybe it was cuz it was only minutes old when i found it.but Duckworth got along better with the chicks then they did with themselves sometimes . Lol. I just wanted to say please dont get any more birds than you are sure you can handle . I wish someone woulda told me that at first. There is so much out there to learn and the medicine out there is great now but if you are keeping them as pets not food you dont want them to die and now we can cure many common ailments.but administering medicine is hard and each bird needs to be given medicine and worked with, wormed and watched. less birds means less work and they get closer to you by not having so much competition. Maybe i am just tired from a bout of chiggers ,bumblefoot and scaly leg mites all in one year.
And for all you bird lovers new and old some information.
Three miracle drugs
VETRICYN IT IS AMAZING i use it for cuts scrapes and sterilizing. I originally got it from the vet but now it is available on the internet at a much cheaper price. It is so nice not to have to worry about getting it around their beaks food and eyes. I tested it on myself of course before i tested it on birds and it is a wonder for humans too. I now use it on my eyes instead of visine. Convenient sprayer makes it easy to treat whole flock and not have to chase birds around the yard. Just the other day i got a very deep cut and sprayed it and it immediately made like a layer of skin. I was amazed. Im not saying humans should do this by any means (please dont sue me)
But when you live million miles away from the doctor its good to know. Better than Neosporin iodine, etc. EVEN IF you are a seasoned fan of vetricyn please read this. Although its good that this medicine is being made readily avalilable there is a large difference in price so shop around. $22.00 is a really good price (for the 16 ounce bottle not the 8) And it lasts but now they are making it for all the other animals too so make sure you order the poultry one. ALSO even the ones labeled poultry have ___different amounts of the active ingredient . lHypochlorous acid . I would've never thought to look at formulas but im so tired of getting ripped off from the internet that i looked to see why it was so cheap. And boy was i surprized. In a good way. There was actually more of the active ingredient in there! Walmart.com and amazon is where im ordering it from right now. Free shipping even out here and drivers are excellent about watching out for animals. No problems so far. SIDE EFFECT: after using the new stuff extensively on my eyes for a few days i developed a stye . Now ive always been super sensitive. All makeup makes me break out and so i get them occasionally. Went back to the lesser chlorinated stuff . No problem but my girl gold bird goldie developed a stye too.i had her in for spa treatments and she had a little scrape as burds so often do. I noticed she was avoiding me when i had the spray. But i wanted the cut to heal because we are dealing with a little bumblefoot. (STAPH INFECTIONS) and thats the only way they spread. So i wasnt sure. Well she definitly developed a stye. Dont worry about cuts and just spraying face. Goldie and me were the exceptions. And remember i was using it directly in the eyes on purpose. Still do by the way. Just the weaker stuff. No problem since. Still the lesser of two evils and the other birds seem to enjoy it. So ,i felt guilty and all my newly found pride at becoming bird doctor to the stars went right out the window. Well the fact that my whole flock is still alive after this winter after all the ailments gave me hope and i said well. Theres all these great things that work for both me and the animals. So, im gonna do for my little super model what i did for myself. Im gonna take a tea bag .soak it in warm water and hold it on her eye. And it worked almost immediately. YEAH! Score another one for us! Also that deep cut i previously mentioned on my hand. I did not have much time with a houseful of bird patients, and a possum ,a skunk and at least seven stray cats showing up for vet care but more on that later. So the VETRICYN good, keep me from getting staph but the spray doesnt reach that deep. So, things are going my way goldie cured and looking at me like pyhsician heal thyself. So i took another teabag $3 for hundred count and put it on the cut which was great on the outside when i had time to treat it but didnt quite feel right. You knowWhat i was feeling and trying to pretend wasnt there actually wasnt there anymore. So now im a big fan of TEA BAGS, too.
VETRX-IThink if humans had this we wouldnt be so worried about the corona virus.lol. once you have everything for your birds mansion and theyre stuck inside for the winter with their awesome heater which this year works better than your house heater, respiratory infections are a formidable foe. This stuff just feels right. I put it in the steamer when i get inside from seeing all these strange animals that are obviously in distress carrying who knows what from who knows where. I dont type good and theres so much i wanted to say but. These products cured a cat with an injury so bad you could see a complete hole thru the bottom of its mouth. I dont know where these animals are coming from so i dont know what happened. They dont make appointments. A cat with a wounded paw that was obviously infected. A possums feet im pretty sure havent seen em for awhile. They are overcoming their natural wildness because they need help. Spraying an animal in the face who you dont know is scary but they literally let me. At first i thought it was a gift. I lost my little wood duck to inoperable bone cancer and i didnt know how i was gonna go on! Best medical care in the world.. state of the art technology and there was still nothing i could do. So i kept busy and i helped a lot of animals. Because alot of the ailments your birds die of can be cured. But not simply, when its all your birds a lot of these things that people find that actually work and are surprisingly cheap are hard as heck to do when you have a bunch of birds. (Like getting a bird to sit their with a teabag on its eye when shes already mad at you for messing up in the first place.)sorry goldie. But its worth the effort when you read about peoples sucess stories.
Also the stories really help me.
Lastly this is one even you experts dont know about i bet. It was a last ditch effort and it worked
Wont bore you with the details but this birds name is misses . Oh what the heck . Ill bore you. Man i wish i could type. Misses came to live with us while duck was still alive and i thought would be for a long time. It has been a year and a half and she just came to us so we could try to make her comfortable as possible when she died. Me and duck made her a spot by us because she was paralyzed from the legs down. I am pretty sure she had mareks disease but she came back from a fox fight obviously injured and was never quite the same.i have seen this alot . It seems the ones who escape heriocly and beat the odds become suseptable to other diseases later on. But anyway mrs goes along good for a year or two just limpimg sometimes just like me. You know how you have your favorites, mainly because they seem to want to put up with you, well that wasnt misses. She was a runt and a little loner. From other birds to.anyway she was doing bad and so we made a place for her. I was considering culling her. I hate that word but its fitting. I always call it calling the game but i dont know a humane way to do it and i hate it. Almost as bad as losing them ,watching them suffering because you dont know how to kill them.but enough about that. You guys shouldnt have to worry about that anyway .the good news. Mrs is sitting next to me right now, cured, shes mobile, shes in the chair wondering if im ever gonna get off the computer.
She is amazing and my best friend.; but dont go thinking im magic or lucky. Im neither. Because misses didnt just get cured right away. What happened was she didnt die. But she didnt get better either. She just. Kept living paralyzed and not looking good for a long time . Id put her in the chair and try to bring her food she liked but i wondered if basicallly i should get around to culling her. But she kept doing surprizing and interesting things and i loved her more and more. Now we find out about Duckworth having cancer. Duck showed up in my driveway one day so little and i picked him up just like that. I didnt know what he was where he came from or how to take care of him. SHE was a wood duck and i didnt even know that for three years. I had pretty much given up on life after losing my whole family to cancer, came out here and realized my lifelong dream of having animals ,named my chickens after my lost loved ones and then no matter what i did my chickens were dying of cancer. So duck changed my life and i learned how to take care of her/him or she took care of me. (Mostly the latter.)Now i have a chicken who i love but who has been terminal for a couple months and the miracle duck is dying too. Not loking good for the peepmore farms. Although this is not very
but never really knew because there was noone who knew about it.. Well now we have this site and it is amazing. A shout out to all of you. I am not just enthralled and impressed by the ones who sound book smart but by people but by the people who arent sure and still say im praying for you. Love the mispellings and the funny bird names. When your praying for a miracle there is now something you can do. Painmedicine for birds. At least thats one thing i learned from watching my family die a slow death for months. It helps when you cant do anything if you can actually do some. thing . Get them pain medicine!.MEDICAM is recommended by one of the best bird people in the world. It is expensive. About $15.00 for ten syringes full. I could make a syringe full last a while. Dont have to inject it just put it in water. Good for animals who are not terminal too. But you have to get it from a vet who lives a long distance away. But still. Now were taking bets on whose gonna die first. Mises or duck. And im hoping the third option me and praying for a miracle. Knowing it aint gonna happen. It was duckworth. And she even manage to do that in an amazing way. Now misses.
What cured mrs. (The first time)
Friend called and said they believed duck spirit was talking to them at work-by now i didnt even doubt duck for a minute. Listened right away.
DuckTold my friend to get food with no gmo food
I said okay, we did. It worked instantaneously. Two days bird was walking flying. It was so weird not to have to carry her from place to place because if she wanted to go somewhere she could go herself cuz by now i was slogging that poor bird everywhere and so scared that
she was gonna die next cuz she was still sick and she was all i had.
Now all the other birds who live in the chicken house where they belong were not having issues but they had more spring in their step and were laying more eggs and i just go wow, that was some duck.

What cured misses the second time-ANIPRIN
Just recently misses has been not feeling good. You live with a bird this long through this much and you just know.I was still not ready to lose her but i was afraid she used up her nine lives. And then some.

What?

Can you post a picture of your bird's eye?
