Show me your cold-climate "pop doors" please!

Hilton? Our coop doesn't even qualify at Motel 6, though I do leave the light on. :)

Then again, except for welded wire for the run & some screws, all the materials were freebies. I much admire many of the lovely coops on BYC, but unless our girls start laying golden eggs, they'll have to be satisfied with their run-down-chic home.

Equibling, I've never had standard birds, but my banties would agree with you: it's not the cold, it's the windchill & precip. They'll gladly go out & scratch in their pen when it's well below freezing, but when the wind ruffles those feathers, they head for the coop.

Spring plans are to take down the chicken house at our farm & build a new, larger coop. Even though the entry will be on the south side & not the north as with the present coop, we'll still have add an entryway/foyer for the pop door(s).

Most of the ones that survived are cold-hardy, standard breeds. I’m down to just mille Cochin & salmon Faverolle bantams. I’m planning on a third bantam breed this spring although I’ve not settled on one, just yet! I also want to work with the white faced white Spanish—but I’ve nervous about all that hanging “goodness” on their faces along with frostbite & dampness. I think with my accidental trial/error this winter, I will be making some MAJOR improvements to my new coops.

However, my hubby thinks I need about $2,000.00 to complete what I want done!?

I really need to work on the golden egg thing, too

rs, nice job, I would either drive some long nails or run some long screws into the 2x4 where your clip lamp is hung....do it through the clip lights clip that does the grasping to avoid it ever slips off and falling causing a fire.

Just a thought....

Right you are, on that!! You can't see it, but I've actually got a giant screw hook on each side- better than a nail! It's sturdy enough for my kid to hang on if it came down to it...the thought of my girls trapped in a burning box scared the pants off of me!!

I just have a 12x12 inch hole in the wall with a board to walk down. But this winter I added a 'porch' which greatley cut down on the wind, show and rain comming in the door. I have no rain gutter so the rain comes right down by the door so it helps with that too. When it gets really cold or windy we simply go out, turn it sideways and slide it behind the 2 3' fence posts next to the side of the coop.

We were worried about the cold harsh winters also. We bought an 8x10 wooden "poultry palace" My husband insulated it and then put plywood over the insulation. He added a heat lamp and made sure to put the little chicken door on the windbreak side of the building. It feels like it is about 40 degrees in there when it is below zero outside! He also put sand in the run for ease of cleaning it. I think my husband LOVES our chickens.
