He's adorable and 10yrs old ? have you had him since a duckling? AND
Aww how sweet, I have 1 drake and 2 ducks that will be 10 this year. They sure are special.
It's a lot of clean up whether you use a diaper or not. But it's not nearly as stinky as having them sit in a tub where they pooh all the time. I kept my ducklings in a tub with shavings when I couldn't have them out and that tub stunk to high heaven!!! When I had my gosling I just left her diapered all the time and she was WAY less stinky haha.![]()
This thread is fascinating! I am so interested in this house duck idea. Forgive me for my ignorance...aren't you worried about salmonella and stuff? I have a 2 year old so I think having a duck in the house would make me a anxious wreck. We have two ducklings right now in a brooder in their own room and they are stinking up the whole house! You guys must clean A LOT!
I am so curious.
You can definitely wait until they are full grown, my boy goose Pom took his diaper just fine and he was aver 3 yrs when he was first diapered! He didn't love the "Getting in the diaper" part but once it was on he was off to the races in no time. My ducklings were diapered as soon as they were able to walk. I don't know if it made a difference having them diapered as babies, but if you are worried about them rejecting their diaper as a grown bird it might be worth a try! Just avoid using a sock again if you can, having pressure (like from mane sock diapers) on their wings as babies can cause a growth deformity. It's important that their diapers not put pressure of any kind on their wings and not restrict their tail feather growth.I would like to know you get your duck to accept the diaper. If I wait until it is fully grown wouldn't that make it that much more difficult to get them to wear it?
I had a little crippled duckling last spring that I tried this on using an old baby sock. He really hated it. He passed a few weeks later so I never tried with another. Now I have a Pekin that is coming home from the vet soon with a metal splint surgically installed to one of it's legs. This duck was a rescue and is so sweet. I'm thinking it may need to be a house duck. Love the idea of the diaper but don't want to spend the money if he won't wear it. Is there a training process for this?
