Show off your house ducks!

We have hardwood in most of the house and after about a week of sliding everywhere Deema has gotten better at it but she seems to limp every now and then. I assume it is from the hard flooring and was so excited about those lil booties posted here! Lol

No egg today either, and I am surprised because she woke me up a few times yanking my pillow and biting, she was pushing like she was laying but no egg! Normal behavior orher than that though. ....

Just came in from having Deema out for her morning run in the grass and hose, lol caught a really cute pic and am sharing

From what I can tell, that looks pretty normal, if it were angel wing I think they would be sticking out away from her body, not up.

Huh, I guess I just don't have a very good sense of smell. I've heard grain feed (as apposed to pellets or crumbles) makes them poop less and not as smelly.
I'm not as familiar with duck nutrition so this is more question based, but it seems to me that grain feeding would be more for fattening up like it is in other kinds of animals? We are pretty sure ChaCha is some kind of peking so we want to be very careful with her weight, especially because she's already so prone to bumble foot. Living in that park really did on number on the poor girl! I also really like feeding fodder because it's not very messy at mealtime AND we live in the desert so ChaCha doesn't get any natural grass on her own. It's definitely her favorite food too, she will only eat the pellets after alllllll the fodder is gone and she can't convince me to give her more (only denied because it's all gone, soon I will have a larger system and she can eat as much as she wants). So while it may make her poop stinky, I think its pretty important for her health not to just feed ground up who-knows-what. Anyone know how to add calcium to fodder? I want to make sure her egg shells don't get mushy if she refuses to eat her pellets, she had that problem when she first started laying eggs because she was more partial to the bunny food (alfalfa pellets) than the duck food so wasn't getting enough calcium.

Speaking of stinky poop... lol. Anyone give there babies AVC in their water? I've tried it a couple of times & man I cannot get over the smell or watery mess lol. I've noticed that Quackers' stink when given AVC now smells like human urine & poop once in a while comes out white & foamy. Is that normal? It's never smelled like that before the AVC. I do about a third of a teaspoon to a quart of water. Even tried diluting it even more but it's still the same stink. Quackers is about 4-5 weeks old.
I add ACV to my chicken's water outside, and when ChaCha goes out to play she drinks their water but I haven't noticed anything different about it? You might double check that white and foamy thing with some duck health forums. Or even shoot a message to Fresh Eggs Daily (through her blog), I'm pretty sure she has an article about chicken poop, but she has ducks too and I know she's all natural so she probably uses ACV and could tell you if that's normal or if you need to get her checked out. Funny pooh is often a sign of illness.

I made some booties/socks for my ducks, Misty started to get two bumbles on her left foot so I thought I'd make them to help pad it, then got to making some for my other ducks who have had bumbles for awhile (slowly healing). I thought you guys might like to see them.

This one was my first attempt. It could use some improvements, but I'd say it was a good first try!

And here is my second and third attempt with Poppy (one of my outside ducks) Modeling them

Now I just need to get some neoprene material to make them waterproof and better at keeping the foot clean if there is an open wound.
Those look wonderful! I've been trying to design a boot for ChaCha using Flip Flops as the cushiony no-slip bottom. I'll have to try fleece too! Do you wrap your duckies feet with something else and topical medicine before putting them in the booties or just use the booties to protect from further infection?

My Party Fowl diaper still hasn't arrived. :/ She said it shipped last Tuesday, but the tracker says it just left IL today. So she lied. ._. At this rate she'll already be too big to use it by the time it gets here!
I'm so sorry to hear about your diaper! Did it ever arrive? I too can vouch AGAINST the post office and their crappy service. I once dropped off a diaper at the post office using the 3day priority mail flat rate boxes, I made the mistake of dropping it in the outside blue post box AT the post office... they didn't remove it from the freaking box for FIVE DAYS. I never would have known for sure except that I just happened to be shipping a second package to the same customer and I dropped that box off 5 days after the first and their tracking info of pick up, travel, and delivery was identically time stamped and arrived to my customer at the same time 5 days later. 3 day priority my BUTT.
However, if she didn't even bother to give you the tracking number I highly doubt she actually sent the package when she said she did. Etsy seller's can be reprimanded if they aren't shipping items on time and customers complain so some dishonest people mark their orders as shipped so they can claim it shipped on time. If it arrives and it doesn't fit I would just request a refund from her. You can open an Etsy dispute against her if she refuses to refund and demand that she provide proof of on time shipment or a refund.

I have a question on egg laying....my duck started laying on my b day, Aug 20 this year, and had 1 egg every day. Then today, no egg! Is that normal to miss a day? I just dont want uer to be bound but from what Ive read, Id be able to tell. That would be painful and obvious, right?
Final post, lol, it seems to be general consensus that dicks cant be litter / potty trained. BUT when Deema has an accident in the house, when her diaper is either in the wash or drying, she goes in the same spot. If she can find her "spot" every time, isn't it possible to train her to go in a box instead? Shes pretty young so I might try it out but what would be good for litter? She eats paper towels and cardboard every chance she gets so those wont work, lol! Cat litter os a no go as shed surely eat it too..... not sure but what suggestions are out there if any??
Shes really aware when she does go and seems almost ashamed, like shes knows shes to poop in her diaper or she even sits by the door and squaks like a dog! Lol
Ducks and geese take more than 24 hours to create an egg in their body, so their laying schedule isn't every day. They have the ability to retain an egg if they aren't safe to lay it, and I would bet that also occurs when they are sleeping so she might miss a day or two in a row sometimes. She also JUST started laying so her body is just learning how to work on it's egg schedule anyway, so unless you can feel the problem egg inside her, she is most likely just fine. She may even stop laying all together for a while, and then start back up in a week or a month.
About the litter training, if she is already using a specific place, I would say absolutely give it a try! I don't know that all ducks would do that, but all species have some individuals who are cleaner than others and you may have just lucked out! See if you can't find a litter box with a grate on top like they make for bunnies. That way she won't be able to play in the litter =)

Oh my goodness those lil booties are too darn cute! We have hard wood floors and it seems to bother Deema from time to time, she limps every now and then for a day but seems to go back to normal but I bet those would help!
We have hard wood floors as well, and Misty does get red/sore feet after awhile. The only problem with these booties is they are made of fleece which is very slippery, I'm wondering what I could sew onto the bottom for traction. Otherwise they don't seem to bother her, and are really easy to make. They only take me about 20 mins to sew, and I don't have too much experience sewing!

Quote: Their bumblefoot is pretty mild (one of their scabs fell off yesterday!) so I just put triple antibiotic ointment on three times a day, and put the booties on if they are going to be on a hard/rough surface so it doesn't aggravate it.

If anyone would like, I could upload pictures/instructions on how to make the booties. My computers mouse's batteries just died, so I can't do it now.

Have you ever used PUL? It's the waterproof lining in most of the chicken and duck diapers out there. It's a fabric with a layer of rubbery plastic that would probably stick to the floor just enough to give good traction. If you have a JOANN fabrics they carry a line called "Babyville Boutique" and it's got all their PUL. If you just ask someone at the cutting counter they can send you right to it. If you sew with a synthetic thread and then toss the booties in the dryer they will be mostly waterproof too, the seams will suck shut around the thread with the heat and the synthetic thread won't wick moisture into the bootie.

I've been using Vetricyn on ChaCha's feet and it works great. I never would have thought of triple antibiotic though! That might be less expensive, thanks for the idea! We have all tile with an area rug in our room so ChaCha has dog beds and blankets around the house to give her feet a rest. It would be great to make her something she can wear all the time though. I'd love to try the pattern you are using if you get a chance to upload it

Best face ever. I love this duck look!
Aww thanks!
What kind of duck is she?
Wobs! Lol what a name! Does it mean wobbly?[/QUOTE]
haha thank you! her name is actually Watson. it was autocorrected! lol. and her little partner is sherlock. she is a runner duck

When i ordered from party fowl on etsy it took 6 weeks from the time ordered for them to arrive. i ordered a size bigger bc i knew theyd grow a lot before they arrived. when they do come, you wont be disappointd. they are very sturdy and my ducks have gotten so use to them they even help dress themselves in the morning.

party fowl also have the booties , ive seen some pictures of people who had made their own.

I hope you're right! I'm only griping because I spent the extra money to get a rush order, yet it's still taken over a month for it to ship. :/ I really want those booties. Do you know if they provide no-slip walking for slick hardwood floors or no?

They have a non-slip rubbery bottom, perfect for hardwood or tile

so with the duck boots I was thinking that you could sew a sticky hand on the bottom of the boot to make it so they don't slip. plus it would act as a bit of cushioning for the foot. But i don't know if this would work or not.
