Show off your house ducks!

My Husband came up with that name. He was one of the brightest yellow ducklings we have ever had. This is him as a baby at work with my husband

Ok fellow house duck keepers I need your advice. My 2 Muscovy ducklings that are are around about 4.5 weeks old their brooder I bought the biggest plastic tub I could find. Its almost4 feet long about 20 inched high it's a monster. It has a chicken wire top so that I could acclimate my cats and be safe from claws and teeth but they get to come out and play while they were out strictly supervised of course. Lol. My cats dont stand a chance the little girl Sassy is very straight forward with the cats . They have just started plucking the chicken wire like a guitar a couple days ago. I am ordering ducky diapers next week also they hate their brooder. So my question now is what would be a good permanent bed for nights when sleeping with us isnt an option, when im out running errands, that kind of thing??

I think most of us use dog crates. I started with one of the big plastic ones but soon learned that the ventilation offered by the metal wire ones were best for our stinky butt lol.
I'll see if I can pull up a picture of ChaCha in her crate. She's gotten a lot better at sleeping in her crate. She used to quack and warble to herself all the time and it drove me insane, but if I covered her crate she would scream that she couldn't see me. Now she naps on the bed during the day, but when she is ready to go to sleep she goes to her crate and crawls right in. I'm back to trying to set her up a nice home on the bottom floor of the bunny tower, it's bigger than her current crate and it will be easier for her to get in and out of on her own.

I use an open-lidded plastic laundry bin, but I also have an extraordinarily tiny duck. I think Ku's got the right idea for a muscovy!

I don't have any photos that I can find, but I'll take one tonight for you.
It works quite well, and she's quite large! Some sort of crested peking most people guess (we don't know, she was a stray)

I had a question for my house duck brethren - how do you guys exercise them? It's FREEZING here so walks are out, and besides, now that most critters have migrated south there are slim pickin's for the resident hawks, crows and bald eagle pair, and Wobbles sticks out like a sore thumb.

I feel bad, he sleeps most of the day like my kitties, I try to play with him but with a bad back it's tough for me to keep him active all day. What do you guys do to keep your little ones active, happy and entertained?

May I share something I did when the Runners were in the brooder? I very securely fastened a small rope that hung down just an inch or two lower than the tip of their bills when they were standing up.

Einz especially likes to pull on things that are just about eye height. That's the only toy they really seemed to like. They had each other, too.

Maybe an unbreakable mirror, an mp3 player nearby playing some happy tunes - some ducks like to sing along.

And there is bath time.

Oh, and the Runners really like to play in potting soil.

He doesn't react to mirrors. He doesn't even really seem to like baths, either, which is weird. And I dunno if I can handle the mess that potting soil would bring, hehe! I do like the string idea, though. His favorite things EVER are hair ties, he'll chase them, nibble them, toss them, you name it! Maybe I should get a laser pointer...I just feel bad, I feel like I'm not enriching his life as much as I could be, you know?

If you are looking for toys, you definitely have to let them pick out what they like. ChaCha's playtime is bath time, but she's also a meat breed so not really meant for lots of exercise. She likes to destroy things. Her favorite at the moment are woven basket type things. She just tears them to shreds! Rolls of toilet paper are fun, she digs and shreds those, and any treat that she can chase - like a grape or a cherry tomato! She gets her digging done outside since we live in the desert and the temperature, while cold, is still bearable here.

Got pictures of her crate =)
