Show off your house ducks!

My pekin(Nibbles) always sees my muscovy(Quacks) flying and he'll run after her and flap his wings like crazy until she lands. It's quite funny to watch but it's also kind of sad. He wants to fly so bad!

I admit it's a bit funny to see, but it's also horribly upsetting! We've tried to toss him onto soft things like onto pillows and into the lake out back, but he seems to hate the water. He'll flap like man and make a beeline back to the shore where we are. We aren't allowed to swim in the lake, so I'm gonna hold off until I can take him to the Sound and swim out there with him.

Another fun tidbit - he has a new habit of losing his mind when I go to use the bathroom. He'll follow me in and when I sit down, he starts quacking and running in tiny circles all super-excited. I have no idea why! What on earth is going on in that little skull??
he is a very interesting little guy. All the more reason to love him even more. His little call duck brain is far more complex than people give his type credit for I think. If you swim with him will you stay close to shore?

Oh, yeah. I wouldn't take hi out more than 10 feet or so. There'd a nice think bank of duckweed and lily pads all along the shoreline, we'd stick to that area just to be safe.

As far as call ducks flying, I have only ever seen 1 of mine really get off the ground. I have a hen that will flap just enough to circle the pen & get over the fence (less than 4 ft high) & then do the same to get back in. A couple other hens have done it once or twice accidently when they stretch their wings flapping out of their night pen in the morning but just the 1 does it on a regular basis. None of their wings are clipped & there is no top on the pen.

I love the thought of them "accidentally" flapping over the fence, ha! Wobs sometimes blows himself backwards and head over tail when he flaps. I guess they're so tiny that even a brief wing stretch like that is enough to send 'em off!

They really are so light that a full flap will lift them right off the ground even if they weren't really trying. It's learning to control where the flapping sends them that's the issue...lol

Yup. :3 I'm still baffled on the toilet thing, though...even if I walk by the bathroom he'll run in and quack at the toilet. Is it the sound? Does he know there's water in it? What is his fascination with that thing, and me using it?!

Hysterical. Oh, man. He is so funny. How do you keep a straight face in your household?

oh goody. I bet that's good exercise for him to paddle around in a large body of water.

Achtie used to do acoustical sound tests in the toilet and the bathroom waste basket (solid plastic). Several of the Runners will do some kind of sonar testing of hollows in stumps or gaps in piles of firewood, or gaps between hay bales. Or buckets. They sound out buckets, too.
