Show off your house ducks!

If you play the two videos at the same time, the result is magical! His frequency of dropping his head from when he was an adorable duckling to now as an adorable drake are identical!  I'm lgoing to keel over from cute overload!!!!

My first little batch of calls went into the incubator, and the second batch will go in by the end of the week.  I'm so excited!  My babies took their first stroll into the main part of the house yesterday.  Their parents and siblings were also out, so I had a mass of ducklings assaulting the cats' feet and sampling the cat food. Mama duck called her batch, and I called mine, and they all split up instantly into hers and mine. Mama took hers to nap by the wood stove (her favorite place even when it is not being used), and mine settled under the brooder where they could watch me clean.  Their father snuck into my 84 year old mother's room, as he loves hanging out at the foot of her bed.  You could hear him doing his soft little drake grunt in the dark.  My daughter chased him out to put him back with his family, and my mom protested: "He was singing to me!"  Too cute!

that is the cutest scenario of duck life in your house. It would be beyond fun and cute to see that on video.

I love having them all running around! Mom and dad will go back outside with their kids as soon as the weather gets nicer. I will probably keep at least one out of my cluster of their kids indoors with me. I want them all, but a quad of heavy ducks would be an insane amount of duck poop to clean!

Yep. I should just buy bleach in bulk. They sleep in the bathroom (easy to clean), and overnight they can make it look like a small thermonuclear explosion went off in there! The housebreaking pads reduce some of the work, but the mopping is still pretty much constant...

Calls get to hang in the brooder a little longer because they are so tiny, but all others get pitched out within days. They go in the wire bottomed brooder where the mess drops through & can be hosed away as needed.

We use big clear plastic storage containers for the little ones, then switch over to a kiddie pool ringed with hardware cloth as they get bigger. Then it's just daily shavings dumping. We have a great compost pile going!

I used to do the daily shavings changes, but with the quantities of birds I hatch at a time it's just much easier to brood the ducks in the outdoor brooder. It was made just for them.

I'm going to have to consider that for the spring Pekin and moulard runs! Unlike the rare and specialty breeds, we are going to have to do production run sized hatches to meet the demand for them. Too many for the kiddie pool!!!

Aargh, the poop. I have two finches that collectively weigh not quite an ounce. And their production is horrendous. I mean, if I pooped in 10 minutes as frequently as they did, my whole life would be spent in the bathroom. What is it with their GI tract that contributes to the frequency?

It always seems to feel like there is more poop than can possibly fit in one bird!!
