Show off your house ducks!

Everybody who's following this thread is probably going to boo me for this, but I'm going to say it anyway. I think you should get him a female companion.

If he is used to ducks this is probably the best answer! But I totally understand that @duckies1230 just isn't able right now. But I'm glad you're planning for this in the future. If you do it in the spring I bet it will be very easy to introduce him because their hormones will do most of the work ;)

Seeing this thread really makes me want to get a duck even more. Right now I just don't know where I can get one.

I called Tractor Supply today, and I was told they don't sell ducks. That was the end of that. The only other place I can think of is craigslist, Ill keep an eye out but I don't expect to find what Im looking for.

I know it's hard, but try to be patient! There are often ducks that come up on CL or even at the humane society that NEED a human flock. You can also check around and see if you can find a school that does hatching projects - those ducks are always imprinted and usually need a good home =) you can also post on CL looking for special needs fowl or individuals who rescue fowl, they are often farm vets or ferriers who go to people's properties to do animal related work and will "rescue" birds in need. They can keep you in their contacts so when they find the perfect pet ducky they can offer it to you!

X2

I have 2 ducks that came into our flock at 3 months old (definitely not imprinted on us, but born around people) and 10 ducks that I got as ducklings shipped on day 1 (imprinted).  As adult ducks they all behave the same with us - the imprinting or lack there of doesn't matter.  Imprinting for ducks is on two things: species and mom.  If the duck sees another duck, it will know it is a duck.  If it imprints as something else, this can only be bad for it.  If you are the big thing that it fixates on, you will be imprinted as mom. This is nice for sure, but once the duck is 8 weeks old, mom doesn't matter anymore.  With grown ducks you must develop your own relationship.  Imprinting in other birds is different (goose imprinting is much more profound).  Ask @kukupecpec
about the rewards of an adopted house duck.  ChaCha couldn't be anymore domesticated than if @kukupecpec
had sat on the egg herself.

Oh man, it's so true! And I don't even know where she came from! If you're willing to be patient, a perfect duck can literally fall in your lap =)

Lap ducks are awesome!

I know Daisy was a Muscovy, but was she a special something that made her so tiny? I have a ducky friend looking for a buddy for their female house duck and she is really interested in muscovies for their quiet quack and sweet temperament but she would love something tiny. I thought I would ask you how/where you got her? Plucky is the duck looking for a buddy - she's the most docile duck I've ever seen and her sweet relaxed loving temperament reminds of Daisy so much!

Most of you know by now that ChaCha hates animals lol

So I was wondering, I know many of you have dogs that get along with your ducks, but do any of you have cat/duck friendships in your house?
There are now TWO neighborhood cats that like the safety of my backyard (because we are the only people in the neighborhood without outdoor dogs), both of them sleep right next to ChaCha's house and ChaCha doesn't mind them at all! But if a dog or rabbit or anything feathered comes within sight ChaCha flips out and will attack and fight them. I'm wondering if a house cat may be in our future ... I'd love to hear your cat and duck stories and see your pictures!

Id really rather not have to wait. Do I have any other options all?

Craigslist, evenn Facebook, and tractor supply only sells ducks and chicks 6 weeks out of the year, IgotI got mine in April and that was the beginning of it. But even tractor supply will not sell a single duck, you at least have to buy 2. Are you sure you only want one, ducks are a lot of work, a lot. And if you are going to have one house duck there is so much more that goes into it. Sorry, I am not trying to criticize you, plz don't think that. I only have one right now, not by choice and I try to be there all the time but its not the same.

@kukupecpec AND @ JadeComputerGirl I will most certainlycertainly get him a female in the spring, it would be mean not to. I don't even know if I'm allowed ducks, its a long story, JoJo is safe, but I bring a few more into the mix, I can't keep them in my tiny apartment so it just wouldn't work.

Understandable, and I don't remember you saying you lived in a small apartment. I miss a lot of posts due to lack of time to keep up with them the way I'd like to. I know you have a lot going on right now, and I was thinking that getting another duck might make things a little easier on you. I think one duck is actually harder to care for than two because one duck needs about 20 times the attention two ducks need since they keep one another company. I wish the very best for you and will be glad to help you look when you get ready. I'd give you one or two of mine at no cost since I know you're a great duck mom, but the size difference wouldn't work out. Ducks can't get much further apart in size than Pekin vs Call, and you're going to need something at least in the medium weight class.
