I was reading somewhere in this forum how the term "show quality" was a ridiculous term, which I agree. However, the term is promulgated by the large hactheries when they claim that their chickens are not "show quality".
They are the ones to blame. You cannot blame a person for wanting a higher quality chicken which in their mind is "show quality".

There must be such a thing as show quality; i.e. a bird that is good enough to be shown. Not every bird conforms to standard & is good enough to show, they clearly are not show quality.

Sometimes hatching eggs or chicks are advertised as 'show quality' & that must be nonsense because even top breeders can be sure that every chick is going to be 'show quality.

What a top breeders can probably say is, that their breeding stock are of show quality & there is a good chance that their offspring will either be of show quality or themselves be able to produce show quality offspring.

As with many things, over time definitions change and preferred terminology does as well. Some people prefer the term "bred to the standard" to that of "show quality." IMO, it is merely semantics. If not bred to the standard, then it simply cannot BE show quality, and if it is show quality, how can it not be bred to the standard?

In my mind, SQ, means a bird with
- no disqualifications
- few if any faults
- correct type
- close match to standard
- fares well with competition

yup!!..and some times some people says SQ when they talk about the Utility traits of their breeds, as a rule, Utility and SQ don´t go hand to hand...why? I guess its already hard to keep to standards and to also expect a prolific utilitarian breed...
