Hello,
I’ve been emailing with a few LF Cochin Breeders who say they have good “show quality” lines, however I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with a breeder that has delivered good show quality lines for them. Just needing some advice. Also, how much should I expect to pay for show quality adult birds?
Thanks!

A show quality line does not make 100% show quality birds.

What you pay for a good quality standard bred bird depends on how rare it is and the quality of individual bird you're buying. It doesn't matter if a bird came from "show quality" if it has faults or doesn't conform to the standard.

I tried to go by the APA standards both written and pictures of show birds when buying my birds, but as I say I’m completely new at this. The birds are 9 mos old so I guess I’ll just continue to see how they progress. My son will be showing them at the 4-H fair in June so I’m sure we’ll get lots of valuable advice from the poultry judge.

For good quality birds that are from a show winning line and are true to their standards you should be looking at between £30 to £100 each, depending on the breed and quality. If a trio is what you are after expect to pay anywhere from £100 to £300!

It is not cheap, but I would suggest going for the best ones available because there is very little point getting a trio of birds that are £80 from a rubbish line when there are some on offer for £225 that are clearly better quality. Just save up for the better ones because they will be more rewarding and you will be able to dive right into showing and breeding instead of wasting £80 and then having to spend a few generations fixing their errors.

Good luck! 😊🏆
