Our local pet store was throwing away these bunny cages so i took them for nesting boxes and left the doors on three of them in case i needed to lock up a chicken

I'm using a double speaker box as a temporary nesting box. So far, I've had 2 eggs laid in the dog house, 2 in a dog crate, and 2 in my planter box under my kitchen window.

They spend time in there, but lay elsewhere. Silly chickens. I'm just happy they're finally laying after 7-8 months.

Post #225 - Where'd you get your "nest box" ?

Not sure if Hokum Coco saw your question. That is a Fowl Stuff "nesting box" - a heavier duty bucket with a front and a perch on it. You can find the original by the designer/maker here at his website - Fowl Stuff - plus now you can find the nesting box, front & perch, tractor nesting box at various websites. Not on Amazon or eBay yet.

I'm getting ready to order the front and perch from Fleming Outdoors (link below on this site) and can let you know how they do! Since my buckets will be set up like a tractor, with the back of the bucket out of the coop and having an opening to reach in and get the eggs, I may have to insulate the buckets. We are getting ready to go thru our NC "ice blasts" here and I don't want to deal with frozen eggs.

We use kitty litter containers. Looks kinda funny but works like a charm. We cut the bottom out and left a small lip and hung them on the out side of the pen. Now we can gather eggs without going inside the pen every time

Sweet!! Welcome to BYC!
Apropos for a place called Slidell...haha!
Will be curious to see if those sliders hold up with the dust accumulation that is so common in a chicken coop.
How deep are the nests(from front to back)? They look a bit shallow.
Hi aart, thank you for the kind comments and thank ya for welcoming me to BYC... great site and lots of great ideas. The nesting boxes are 12x12x12 and the sliders will hold up 200lb and are self closing... used them on other projects with no problems.... but we'll see how they work out in the coop...
