I've noticed in a few post people have mentioned goose shows and I was just curious how you would find goose shows (I'm in Northern VA) and what tehy look for - I know for dogs there are standards for each breed - Are there goose breed standards I could get somewhere (I have Pilgrims)

Thanks so much to everyone for all of the information on this board

Down here in Mia. we have a Youth Fair, and only children can enter things. The chickens/ducks/geese sections are loaded.

the only thing is that other people just can't keep their hands off of them. poking them of puling their feathers.

When I was kid I won 2 trophies, one for best water fowl in show. For a goose that I had.

I'm an adult so I guess that would disqualify me from the youth fairs

, but I didn't even think of people poking and pulling at my birds, but it makes sense (images of poking the birds at the state fair when I was a kid floating back). I'm not sure that my birds are actually show quality I was just scanning the posts and saw a bunch of references to showing - I've shown horses, goats, dogs, and rabbits and was just curious how it went with geese

You can find listing for shows in the Poultry Press
or maybe even the APA website.
Anyplace they show chickens they will have classes for ducks and
geese as well as long as its an APA accepted breed which Pilgrims are.
I think some 4-H Fairs are open shows so adults can show too.
Google poultry shows and I bet you will find some listings.
Theres a big national show in the Fall every year in Ohio.
Worth going to even if you're just a specator.

The American Standard of Perfection is a book that is supposed to be used by judges when they are evaluating poultry at shows. It is available at Amazon and other booksellers. To learn about shows, see http://crohio.com. There is also a group called the International Waterfowl Breeders Association for those interested in our web-footed friends!

Yes you can show geese. the American Poultry Association is like the American Kennel Club is for dogs. They publish the Standards and train and regulate the judges. The shows cover waterfowl (geese and ducks) Large and bantam Chickens, Turkeys, and guinnae fowl. Geese are part of Waterfowl. and there are 3 classes, heavy, medium, and light. Pilgrims are in the medium class but very seldom win even their class due to stiff compention from other medium geese. If they win their class they compete for best and reserve goose. which compete against all the ducks to determine best and reserve waterfowl which then compete against the other classes to determine the best of show.
BTW poking or messing with the birds at these shows is likely to get you ejected from the show hall!

International Waterfowl Breeders Association is likely to be more exotic, "wild" waterfowl rather than the old standard type birds.

If you have any real interest in showing your birds, Join the APA and subscribe to the Poultry Press for all the info on shows, Shows are most often held in the fall of the year so not to interfer with the breeding cycles

The International Waterfowl Breeders Association was founded in 1971, by Lou Horton, to promote all types of waterfowl. Lou Horton is a certified judge and breeder of purebred waterfowl.

You are are very correct! I was confusing them with The International Wild Waterfowl Association (IWWA) I am sorry about the false information!

You can also google state poultry shows in your state, that is how I found my first, then you have to learn what terms like " coop tags close " means....and if you have to NPIP.... Etc. I just went to a show as a newby and knew nothing and felt like I was in a foreign country and didn't know the language and procedure....like I thought meets of a club meant a meeting where people sat and talked...
