Showing... how to begin?

Just an FYI....there hasn't been a bird that has tested positive for pullorum in 100 years and counting, I think that was the number I was given, that would apply to Indiana....But its a way that the "big Business" poultry corporations can keep tabs on the hobby farmers....And if a bird ever does test positive; Watch Out....

Google "Open Poultry Show your state" that should bring up some club meets and apa sanctioned shows. If you follow the link to the show , somewhere on the site there usually is links to other area shows.

Just in case there is somebody that don't know how to get PNIP certified. Call your local Department of Agriculture and tell them what you need. They will direct you to the person you need to do business with. In my county there is no fee for the testing but a $25 fee for papers. They can do it for free but if you want to be able to have certificationpapers you have to pay for those. Mine are due in October so i'm calling today to get an appt for next month.

Shoot a PM to Wegotchickens about the specifics in Tennesee. I know that she entered her D'uccles and Bantam Silkies in an ABA sanctioned show in Newport back in the Spring. She can give you the ins and outs of registration and requirements in TN.

I would also check the chickenstock/show board and search for SW NC and NE GA given your proximity to both.

Go to the ABA website, they list some shows. http://www.bantamclub.com/site/ They, nor anyone else list all the shows but I did see 2 shows in Tennessee.

Most states require require that your birds be tested for Pullorum/ Typhoid, which is usually free and done by the State.

For the record, if you are only wanting to show poultry to get that BLUE ribbon so that you can increase your profits, you will fail miserably. As you should.

If you want to show exhibition poultry for the love of it and the friendship of the people, then join the ABA or APA and get their Newsletters and Yearbooks and see what you can learn.

I didn't say it was soley for profit... I'm out for the quality of my Delaware (mainly) and the future of the breed. By learning you will be making your birds better and better THUS improving sales of your hatching eggs. Also, there are people out there that won't buy from you unless you have showing birds. I think that is a shame, personally.

I have been working with Delawares for years. It would be nice to be able to show them off. I'm not saying I would get a blue ribbon my first time... it might be awhile but, trust me, I'm well on my way. I'm working very hard, and getting somewhere, getting pure stock. No mixes of with Columbian color patterns.

I think that showing as a way of getting more people to see your birds and your name is a wise decision. Matter of fact, some of the best breeders don't even have to be online because people who attend shows know their names and contact them that way. So, like I said, I didn't mean for it to come accross as you took it. I guess I was just trying to avoid this long speech.
