Showing off my LF Dark Cornish

Thanks for showing the pictures of a purebred Cornish carcass.
I have always wanted to know what the purebred Cornish looked like.
It looks pretty similar to the Cornish-Rock commercial hybrid.
I have a contemplating crossing a Pure bred dark Cornish Rooster with barred Rock hens to make a meat hybrid black sex link.

That should work to make a BSL, although the Dark Cornish sex linked feathering might mess with it a bit.

I don't know why dark cornish aren't more popular. My DK hen is by far the friendliest bird I have, she's a great layer and really sweet. Thanks for sharing pictures of the carcass, it seems like a ton of meat.

@Redhead Rae My husband and I have been discussing getting some Dark Cornish, and keeping breeding stock. I read an article that said there are fertility problems, so I'm searching this out to see if it's true. I see at the beginning of your thread you hatched some by broody mom. Can you tell me about what the fertility rate is in your experience?

Are yours from hatchery stock or a breeder?

Janet, I got my stock from a show breeder. If it weren't for incubator issues, I believe I would have had a 75% hatch rate. 90+% of my eggs were fertile. If you are going to hatch Cornish, I suggest spending the money to get a GOOD incubator.

Thanks for replying @Redhead Rae. That sounds much better than what I've read. The article said it's not uncommon to set 100 eggs, only to have maybe 3 hatch. If that was true, nobody would breed them!

I do have a good incubator and experience, and as long as the eggs are good, about 90-100% hatch rate. If I get them they'll be from a breeder, and I'll try to breed to SOP, or close to.

I was liking the Dark Cornish, but not really seeing anywhere I can get them easily. Also looking at the White Plymouth Rocks as they are just a bit smaller, but lay better when not looking for meat eggs.

Any thoughts between the two? Probably would be using a Dark Brahma as the rooster, at least to begin with.

I have no experience with white rocks, sorry.
