Does anyone on here show their turkeys? Do they have to have papers and be pedigreed? I just wanted to take my one male to the state fair and wasn't sure what i might need.

It depends on your fair's rules. My fair (Missouri) doesn't require any kind of paper work or a vets signature saying it's healthy, because I thought you would have to do all that stuff too. It's probably the same way with all states, but it might not be. We just fill out a form to register them for the fair, and take them up there. When's your fair?

Ours is July 29-aug 6th i think? I think my turkeys might be to young, but it seems as though there is a category for turkeys under 1 year. Do they have to weigh a certain amount?

Read your entry form and rules. They will tell you what health requirements the show has. Your size requirements are your Standards of Perfection. You should have different weight requirements based on breed and sex, both young and old.

Get the premium list for the fair (that's a list of all the different classes, the entry fees, the requirements and the prizes paid.)

In most states, birds will be blood tested as they enter the grounds, unless your farm is certified NPIP. It will tell you in the premium list what is required.

Treat your turkey for lice and mites before you go. It's as embarrassing as heck to have the judge point out that your bird has lice.

Turkeys aren't registered like dogs. They have to be purebred to enter as variety class, but there is probably going to be a market class or mixed breed class if you don't know what your turkey is.

Go and have fun.
