Hello all! Last year I was counted off for not using a "turkey cane" for walking my turkeys in showmanship. I have never seen a turkey cane. My showmanship was like how regular turkey showmanship is where I walk the turkey in with my hands, then held the turkey between my legs when I needed to answer questions. I also had to pose the turkey by hand as well. This year, I bought a cane that would be good for walking turkeys with, but how do I train my turkeys to walk with a cane? I still have no idea what a "turkey cane" is, so just bought one with a small hook that a turkey's neck could slip into and not easily get out of if they tried to run away (it is about 3' tall as well). They are terrified of the cane and try to run away from it at all costs. I have even tried doing activities they love to do, but introducing the cane into the equation. The only one that they remotely enjoyed (and only one turkey "enjoyed" the activity) was swimming in their little wading pool. I've tried to give them apples, dried breads, seeds, bugs, and anything else I thought that they would enjoy. Does anyone else have any ideas on training them to love the cane so I can correctly use it as a showmanship device? Do you think I should train them to enjoy having the loop part around their necks as well just as a precautionary measure?
Thank-you for ALL the help ANYONE has to offer!
Emily
This is like the cane I bought today, exact same shape, but mine is a green color. Not quite as long as this one. Thought maybe the color or shape may be kind of throwing the turkeys off, but I'm not sure.
EDIT: There was a typo on the cane length. The length is 3ft instead of four. I also added a link to a cane that is like the one that I bought.
