So I shred my mail that I dont want and I was wondering ----Can I use that in my nesting boxes ? Remember its mail like magazine cover and bills that I paid. Anything that comes in the mail that has my name and address on it? It is very finely shredded.

the shreded paper is OK just watch for any of the plastic windows or those credit card things that I get sometimes.

Also when they are done you can add it to your compost for your garden

so it doesnt matter that it is like this small (sssssss) and what kind of print it is ? I do get alot of magazines and catalogs so this would definetly save me money. lol Also might be easier to clean the poop out of the nesting boxes than with the shavings

There have been comments in the past that the chickens might eat the paper, and the ink may not be good for them. The paper I use is printed with soy ink. Never had a chicken eat the paper before this summer. My new pullets did eat the paper, stupid chickens.

They seemed to have stopped.

I tried using shredded mail, and it just wasn't very absorbent- it ends up kind of sticking together in a big wet glob. I use pine shavings- they absorb odors and moisture. The shredded mail goes in my worm bins and the compost heap.

I mix shredded paper with straw and pine shavings. I do put more shavings than the paper or straw, but both the paper and straw are free, and the mix works well in the coop, and in the garden after composting. I have a dirt floor in my coop. I put a good layer of paper down first, then lots of shavings, and last sprinkle the straw over. The girls love scratching through the straw looking for the grain left in the straw.
