Shredded Newspaper in Nest Boxes?

Are there any problems or risks involved by using shredded newspapers in nest boxes? Can the ink taint the eggs at all?

I have tons of newspaper and it would be very economical!!

First of all, almost all newspapers now are printed using vegetable oil based inks. No problems there. I used shredded paper for a bit, and my chickens spread it out all over the place. It ended up outside of the coop, where it got blown all over the yard, into the neighborhood, etc. I stopped, but by all means, try it.

I have been getting shredded paper from the local bank on a regular basis. I tried both short shred and long shred (long shred is full paper length, short is more chopped up) in my boxes but they seem to get tangled in the long stuff and kicked out the short. They like straw

I do use the short shred for bedding though. It works really good along with some shavings. It breaks down in my compost pile faster than the wood shaving does.

(and I am recycling!)
