My friend who has chickens, is asking if she could put shredded paper in her chicken coop along with the straw. Is this harmful in any way to the chickens?

It's not harmful unless there's something weird about the paper or its inks.

However be aware that, at least when used solo (I have no experience using it in a mixture with straw), shredded paper when dampened with poo, moisture etc, will turn into a *particularly* nasty form of paper-mache, which can be aggravating to clean out. Some people find this manageable and use shredded paper in the coop with no problem, I'm just warning you about what can happen

Have fun,

I use shredded newspaper in the coops along with shavings and hay. It works just fine. Most newspapers use vegetable oil based inks, so I don't worry about that. I just don't use glossy magazine type paper, or anything waxy.
