Has anyone used shredded paper on the floor of their brooder box? Does it work well for composting as well? Has it worked for anyone? Just curious...we have an endless supply of shredded paper and didn't know if it could work. Thanks for the help!!

I found that the paper stuck to the eggs. I never tried it for the floor of the coop- mixed in with the pine shavings, it may be good.

I use shredded paper in my grow-out boys coop. It is not really "great".

Once it starts getting wet - it is hard to dry out, so the wet clump needs to be removed. Mats down really easy. I do not think I would use it in a brooder - I would use sand first.

But is nice to spread around the fruit trees or in the garden once "used".

I was hoping to use it just for a day or two in the brooder box while we finish our coop...do you think that would work? The chicks aren't old enough yet to lay (only 7 weeks) but wanted something in there. Are you saying sand is better?
Thanks for the help!! Can you tell I am such a noobie?!?

Oh for a couple days, ya I would use it. I just would not use it long term for chicks as you might have to change it daily or twice a day.

Yes, you can use sand also - not salty sea sand, but backyard type sand - or I use desert sand cause it is free and right out the door
