I had a batch of five survivors out of 8 due yesterday. One hatched with no problems, another three pipped but couldn’t get any further (gave them more than 24 hrs), one hasn’t pipped yet but is definitely still alive. The problem for the three who pipped but couldn’t get out was that the inner membrane was tight around them and they didn’t have the strength or movement ability to break it. It’s shrunk to them, strong and stringy. So they were going to die anyway. I helped two of them. Both were kicking to get out in my hands, there was no blood and the yolks were completely absorbed, so I think I did the right thing. When I was helping them out the inner membrane had stuck to the chicks quite badly. One is still shrink wrapped in the inner membrane but there was blood when I tried to help it so I have put it on a wet paper towel to try for itself. One of my chicks was helped three hours ago and has fluffed up but it is still flopping around and falling on its back. The other seems ok, but hasn’t fluffed up yet. Both squirted out water from their bums at the point of hatch. Is this normal or have I no hope of them surviving?

There is hope, often they will make it with a little care, and sometimes they will die one to two days later. Keep them warm and give them sugar water with an eye dropper. I choose to hope.
