Shrink wrapped ducks?? What should I do?

OMG, I just found this thread and it has a lot of helpful advice. I just hatched a batch of calls last week and had similar problems. Mine were extremely gooey! I will definitely be lowering the humidity on my next hatch. In fact this has got me pretty worried about my current hatch of peafowl. I never know how high the humidity should be, since there is so much conflicting advice on the subject. My last hatch of peas was a little gooey also, but not as bad as the ducks. One of the ducklings was so crusty that I ended up holding it under the warm water faucet and rubbing off the goo. It's a wonder that it survived, but it is thriving now. I had to assist all the ducks and one still had a nickle sized ball of yolk attached when I removed it from the egg. I wrapped it in a warm damp dishcloth and it survived and is doing fine also, no thanks to me I'm sure. I ended up with 6 duckies and they are all adorable! Keep up the great advice and guidance Dr. L!
A lot of people have this theory at least I think they do, that because it's a water fowl it can tolerate water, Well what they don't understand is when they are in that shell they have NOT developed the correct usage of using there lungs yet. so to much water is going to kill them. It's best to have a Shrink wrapped egg over a sticky egg (If normal hatching isn't a choice) LOL

I have to say i love this title of this forum. Because we were dealing with JUST the opposite. LOL.. When they get sticky they are literally STUCK in that egg, they usually either give up OR sufficate. They can't remove that gooy stuff it's almost like super glue. When it dries up it's HARD as a rock... YEK, cleaning them off is the only way but it must be warm water otherwise they will get cold, you don't want them cold.... decreases there heart rate and makes them very very weak.. Keep them warm is the KEY for all Hatchings...

PLUS there are a lot of sites that say 80 to 90 but what people are NOT reading is this number is for Wet bulb, Most of us do not use a wet bulb, we simply go to walmart or whereever and get a regular gage which the readings are NOT going to be that high..

So as long as humidity is down, you'll be OK, also keep an eye on the readings they will CHANGE, as the weather changes....

YES....this is an AWESOME thread with lot's of good information on how to deal with a difficult hatch! Glad you found it!!! Hmmm...we should be careful though...if word gets out...Dr. L might start charging for services...being booked for talks and seminars...the "little" people need her...LOL

The only thing I would like in return is Eggs!!! I have to treat my HD- Disease you know otherwise i will die. LOL..

Ooooh my gosh ALHmama they're adorable!

I have a question, if anyone can offer me some advice... I've got four call duck eggs in my incubator at the moment, on about day 22. After candling them I've started to panic that the air cells are too small! Do you think dropping the humidity for a couple of days would help? Or should I raise the humidity as it's getting close to hatch time?
OMG YOUR TAKEN THE CALL CHALLENGE! YOU DO KNOW THESE ARE THE HARDEST TO HATCH DON"T YOU?????

If your on day 22 You should have them off the turner and keeping the humidity where it's at, which is where???

Don't raise or decrease it. Calls only take 26 days and tomorrow is your lockdown day.. OH BOY. The call challenge.. WOW.. Have you ever taken this challenge before? Where is the humidity at a right now??

Keep those eggs at a slant. let them get into position. make sure the large end is slightly higher. Reason: because it helps with upside downers although I love those kinds they are tricky to get out..

Why are call ducks so hard to hatch lol
Calls are hard because One they have small beaks and TWo Short necks, so it makes it difficult for them to get to the top and get out. So you have to watch them closely. With the small beak and short necks they struggle trying to crack open that shell..

Ohhhhh that makes sense... Kinda like a double trouble thing... We only have swedes, cayugas and buffs and we havent had issues..
