Shrink wrapped egg??

Day 35 of incubating Muscovy eggs. One of them pipped externally Friday. Saturday made a bigger hole in same spot. Today has not made much progress. Right or wrong I decided to peel back some of the shell. It looked like the membrane is stuck to the ducklings head but the bill is free and moving around. I put coconut oil on it and it went from white to clear and it looked like maybe veins. I put it back so now do I just wait a few hours for it to finish? Do I need to wrap it with a wet paper towel? The baby is chirping and moving it’s head around.

Is the membrane covering the duckling bloodless? If so, it is safe to assist. Remove the shell on the rounded end; just as a hatching bird would do. Remove the membrane in that area too and rub he edges back away from the ducklings body so it does not dry and stick to the duckling. Put it back in the incubator and let the duckling push free on its own. Removing the duckling completely from the egg could be disastrous if the yolk sac is not completely absorbed as this would cause the duckling's death.

I can’t tell the membrane was white but once I put the oil it turned dark and kind of red. I don’t think it’s bleeding but the veins look red. I can’t get a good pic through the incubator.

I got a pic through the incubator but it’s not great. It looks from the pic like it’s bleeding but it doesn’t in person! The pic makes it look worse then it is. I think it’s just the oil.

Leave it for 3 more hours, and then check again. The membrane should look like this when its ready. Zero veins.

Wait until it looks like that to assist. Don't wrap it in a wet paper towel, even if it's warm it will chill the chick. If the membrane was white it's fine. White=good, yellow/brown=bad.
