I have a 5 day old Lakenvelder chick that I received from the hatchery on Wednesday. Seemed OK til I checked them this morning.

He has had bad pasty butt(which I have been cleaning) since I got him.

He has been being fed medicated chick food and his bedding is pine shavings.

He seems to be straining to go poo and when he does, it is very stringy.

He won't lay down, but is weak and wobbly.

I have him in a seperate box and am giving him sugar water(there is food available also). He doesn't want to eat and I have to dip his beak to get him to drink.

My vet is out of town for a few days so I cannot get any help there-can anyone tell me what this could be and how do I treat it?

Thanks for any help and advice!

first off never have chicks on pine shavings. put him on paper towel or at least newspapers. he might have eaten some of the shavings causing him to have pasty waste. try that hopefully someone will be more helpful.

My little lakenvelder seems to be getting weaker, he can't stand at this point.

I have been getting him to take a little water, but no food.

He seems to be struggling now.

I'm afraid he's dying, can anyone suggest anything?

Found out this chick has cocci(bloody poo)-none of my feed stores had the meds I needed and my vet is at a seminar(ain't that the way).

Is there anything I can do to save this chick?
