Sick African goose

Just bring her to any vet without calling first. Make sure it's during normal hours when people would be in the waiting room, to be sure they don't turn you away and make themselves look bad. But it's going to cost A LOT just to walk in, and even more because you're not scheduled and it's a bird (goose).

Personally, I would try to give her Niacin (brewer's yeast). Any amount would be fine. Just sprinkle it on her feed, or if she isn't eating, put it in her water and watch her eat the bubbly chunks.

Keep the water fresh though, yeast gets 'happy' when it gets wet.

Sounds like she may just have a niacin deficiency. I think you can get liquid niacin at the drugstore??
Niacin is like vitamin b, and without high enough concentrations of it (like feeding something that is intended for chickens or turkeys, not ducks and geese) they can develop serious leg problems and even neurological issues.

I'm sorry about your goose. There is a avian vet in Raliegh. I took my sebbie there last month. I took him to a vet in Favetteville first to the tune of $300 and then ended up taking him to the exotic vet anyway. So if at all possible try to take him to one that specializes in birds so you do not waste your money. The avian vet had a program I signed up for called carecredit and it is intrest free for 18 months! It was a life saver!
As far as the gosling, I agree that it sounds like a vitamin problem! I had a duckling with the same symptoms and I gave him the polyvisol and kept him under a light and he is great now! Good luck!

I hope that I did the right thing. I'm questioning myself now. I wound up carrying her to an avian vet and she took her and gave her fluids and then they took her to a rehabilitation place to get well. Couldn't I have done this? I'm mad as hell at the avian vet now because she told me that it was just a goose. Why in the world is an avian vet saying such a thing? The vet said that it's a vitamin deficiency with botulism plus something called rubberneck probably from the vitamin deficiency. I want her back when she gets well but in the meantime I'm going to fix the pen up so this won't happen again. I don't have much money to work with so a little has to go along way. The other geese and ducks seem fine. Cross my fingers and toes! I feel so bad about this. I didn't see it coming. There's alot of mud in the pens with no grass so I have to cover the mud up somehow. I'm been knowing about the mud for awhile and so far have put 2 loads of sand in the pens and still MUD. I HATE MUD!!!!! I just hope that she pulls through. I'm so sad about this. The rehabilitator said that it would be 24-36 hours before we really know if she'll pull through. It started Friday so hopefully I got her treated in time. I know she's going to be beautiful (Embden and Buff combination). He said he'll call me to let me know. I think about her all the time.

Just thought I'd update you'll on her. Thanks for all of your help!

Cindy

Sorry you are going through this. That was a pretty stupid statement from the vet. Sheesh! If you felt that way, you wouldn't have bothered calling her!

I don't have geese but I have ducks. The leg issue comes up from time to time. I put brewer's yeast either on their food or in their water. I also use raw apple cider vinegar in their water and it seems to clear everything up within a day or two.

How much Brewers yeast and apple cider vinegar do you put on their food or in their water? Is there such a thing as too much or too little?

Thank you for the caring!

Cindy

I still think you could have treated her fairly cheap just by giving her a vitamin boost. With niacin and vitamin B etc.

Brewer's yeast has a very high concentration of niacin, that's why it's recommended to put on their feed or in their water if leg issues pop up.

Hope all goes well!

I don't know how she's doing. I'm trying to wait until Monday to call the rehab guy. I'm hoping that he'll call me first. I don't want him to think that he can keep my gosling. I hope she's doing better and hasn't left this world. I think he should have called by now, he's had her since Tuesday Afternoon.

I'll keep you posted on what I find out.

Cindy
