I picked up 12 baby chicks from the feed store today. All the babies seemed fine when I brought them home but I just checked on them and one of my red sexlinks was stuck on her back and cheeping loudly. She seems very weak and lethargic. I have a Brinsea Ecoglow brooder and all of my other chicks seem warm and fine. They nest under the brooder and then come out for food/water and to run around.

I gave the weak chick some sugar water. I wanted to be 100% sure that she's warm so I have been letting her sleep in my jacket (see pic). Any other suggestions about what I can do? She's so cute and I don't want to lose my new baby!

Thanks!

Some chicks were just never meant to make it, it seems. One out of twelve really isnt that unusual a number. I'm sorry. But, it may make it yet. Sometimes the runts or weak ones are slower to grow yet as adults, look like all the others.

I am so sorry about your weak little one! A Black Copper Marans chick that we ordered recently arrived and seemed to be at death’s door; she was extremely weak, had no energy to speak of, and couldn’t even walk correctly without stumbling. I used a dropper to feed her yogurt and give her water several times a day, and I also gave her Nutridrench, which is a very effective nutrient supplement. She survived, and now is quite normal and acts like the other chicks. I now believe that only our care and prayers brought her through, and I don’t think that there is any chick that there isn’t hope for. I hope yours makes it!
