hi newbie here,
i have a 6 month old Deleware she has been fine. until today. she is hanging her head. and not eating or drinking. her stools are white. but her eyes are clear.
could she be egg bound. would that cause something like this?
I'm also new at chickens too! i appreciate all help...
thank you chick723

Oh my gosh, I was just about to post almost the same thing, and thought I'd read yours first...I have a 5 month old d'Uccle pullet that was fine yesterday, and today won't eat or drink, hangs her head, and is fluffed up(oh, and her crop is empty). I force fed her some water and a mix of egg, yogurt, applesauce baby food, and a dollop of mollasses, and she would stand all the way up after, and actually preened a little, but that's it. And when I put her away (she's in the house with her sister now) she pooped out what could only be egg albumin...no smell, and kind of sticky...I can't feel an egg in her abdomen...I hope someone can help us both!!

i hope so too! i forced some water in her. i have applesauce & egg. but no yogurt or babyfood. do you have a baby or is this something you just keep around (babyfood)? i have miss Deleware seperated from the rest so they will not peck on her..
and also until i make sure she is not sick so as not to infect the other Chickens.
do chickens get the flu? i know that may sound dumb but you know how the flu hits you instantly. that's just like this.
good luck too you:)

No babies here...I didn't have anything I needed, so I ran to the store real quick after I brought her inside (originally by herself, but she seemed really stressed by herself, so I brought her sister in to be with her, if she is infectious, the other one is already exposed). Oh, and it wasn't regular applesauce I used, it was applesause babyfood. I syringed her 3cc of the mixture, and put her away. When I went back to check on her, she was standing fully upright and had food on her face, so I know she had been eating some of the mixture on her own - gonna add some of her crumbles in now...
How's yours doing??

Could you provide more information? The sticky at the top of the page can give you some guidelines for the type of info that is helpful to people trying to help.

I don't know anything about being egg bound.

Based on the white droppings and age...
it could be lymphoid leukosis, (but I'm just looking at a chart of diseases causing a change in droppings. I am not an expert or anything. The answer might be way more simple than that!)

Are her stools loose or chalky? This might sound really gross, but a picture would probably be helpful too!

thank you to all that has tried to help. and i understand you are not vets. sometimes someone just might have that helpful answer though.
my husband came home and put her outside with the other chickens to graze around she did a little scratching here and there. and ate some. not much. but some is better than none. she is holding her head up now. and her stools are white with some green a little watery, but not severe.not chalky. she is much more stable than this morning. she is a 6 month old Deleware chicken i do not know her weight. shw walks fine. but did sit to rest once.
you can hold her and she just talks away to you so her spirits are good.
i have not treated her for anything because i really have no clue on whats happening with her. except for force watering her.
hope i was a little more informative this time.

thank you all

How does she seem today? Mine looks totally normal today. It's weird because yesterday I would've sworn she was going to die...gonna keep her inside for another day or so to be sure...hmmm...dunno...

hi,
she is 100% better weird! i would have thought the same of her that she was not going to make it...
mine is outside with the rest of the chickens.eating & dinking fine. and plenty of energy. just like nothing was ever wrong. maybe it was like a 12 hr bug or something. who knows..Ill keep an eye on her and the rest to make sure all stays okay...
