Today I came home to find one of my birds had died. I had brought her inside a couple days ago when I noticed she was roosting alone, puffed up, and thin. Since bringing her in, she wasn’t eating and drinking very little. A couple weeks ago I brought in another bird that seems very thin, but she does seem to be eating. A couple months ago, I brought in another bird that couldn’t walk. It seemed that one of her legs was injured or paralyzed. She has since recovered and beside having a puffy abdomen, is doing fine. Aside from watery white, green, black diarrhea, and being thinner, I haven’t seen any indications of sickness. These three birds are just around 9 months old and were given medicated feed until they started laying.

Today I brought in one of my older birds with very green smelly diarrhea. This bird has no direct contact with my other birds. Do these birds all have the same sickness? Could I be having coccidiosis going through my coop? If so, how should I treat it? I could really use some help.

Sorry for your loss. Have you noticed any full crops early in the morning? Do you have a vet where you could take some droppings in to be checked for coccidiosis and worms? Did you suspect an injury in the one with the paralyzed leg, or possibly Mareks disease? If you could keep the body cold, but not frozen, it could be shipped to your or a nearby state vet for a necropsy. That would help to find out what is wrong. Here is a list of state vets to contact:

I tried the number listed and found it has been disconnected. I did order a swab to test Marek’s. That is the best I can do aside from spending $450 on a necropsy.

I first suspected egg binding in the chicken with the leg, then wondered if it was a nerve impacted. it’s possible it was an injury, but her abdomen is really puffy.

is it possible to treat for coccidiosis if I simply just suspect it? What treatment would be suggested?
