Sick Black Sumatra pullet

Hardware disease?? Lol. Yes she had a fecal and there was nothing to see except a few cap worms..not bad. Shes already on the mend thank you, we're taking care of it. Either there's some resistance developing or she didnt get enough dewormer last time.

Yes, hardware disease. Its when a bird swallows a piece of metal like a nail or piece of wire. It gets stuck in their gizzard and will work its way through the gizzard wall and cause a major infection that will eventually kill the bird.

In my experience of over 15 years raising Sumatras they are by far the toughest birds I've run into. Mine have never been sick. Of course hatchery type Sumatras could be a different story I suppose.

I dont like putting them together when they are sick. She can see and hear the flock. Shell be back with the flock in a couple days I think.

I know what "Hardware disease" is, i've just never heard it called that and thought it was funny. We had a peacock die a year ago last summer and we're pretty sure "hardware disease" killed him. Shimmer the Sumatra is fine now. I gave her ZyfendA (which is an amazing BYC product in my experience, by the way) the first day, because it was a weekend and I couldn't get any Safeguard. The next morning she was hugely improved. I followed with Safeguard the following two days, and she's back to normal. I'm giving her Safeguard one more day, then she'll be back with the flock, and they will be dewormed as well so Shimmer will get her ten day dewormer dose, also. She is a very pretty and personable bird, she's settled down nicely. We had a black Sumatra cross rooster once that my son got somewhere, he was gorgeous and never got sick with anything, ever.
