Hi everyone,

I have a 1 year old Buff Orpington hen who has cold symptoms. yesterday I saw her sneeze and when she breathes, I can hear mucous crackling in her... what can I do!!! plerase help me..

Hello. My vet gave us Baytril for our little Buff Orpington. I think that you can order it online. Not sure if that is what you need but I'm sure that you will get some great advice here.

Can I put human antibiotics in their water?????????oh my giod, I am so nervous..they have never been sick before!

I am not sure where you can get it online. Sorry.

I ended up taking Bluebell to the vet I was so worried about her. She wasn't eating or drinking. Our vet has her on Baytril and pedialyte. That stuff is a miracle drug as far as I am concerned! I thought that she was not going to make it and now she is almost herself again - I took her in on Thursday. I thought that you could get it at Foy's but it says no longer available. I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you where you can get it though or even if that is what you need. I am new to all of this.

Baytril and Pedialyte. I can get the Pedi today and will call the vet in the morning. I also called the feed store to see if they have some antibiotics. I broke open an amoxicillian capsule and put it in a bottle of water and gave some by dropper to the sickest. I actually noticed that I have a few with droopy tails and lethargy.

Thanks for the advice :) I will be a nervous wreck till I get the medicine tomorrow.

Are they eating & drinking? I would say seperate the sick ones but if they are all acting like they don't feel well - I guess that wouldn't help. Maybe the vet can give you something to put in their water if they are still drinking... I can't imagine having to feed them all with a syringe! Bluebell did ok with it at first as she seemed to breathe with her mouth open but once she got feeling better... she does NOT want me squirting medicine in her mouth!

It can really be frustrating! Hang in there.

Thank you, Cindy. I gave her some VERY diluted Amoxicillan and pit a tiny touch of Vicks Vaporub on her beak, Not enough so that it would get in her eye or anything like that. Someone on another chicken site advised that. Tomorrow, I will be on the phone to the vet...lol

it's amazing how attached I am to these chickens.

I know what you mean! Never in a million years would I think that I would take a chicken to the vet! Now she is running around the house (yes - inside

thank goodness for Clorox wipes) and she is just so sweet. I am so glad that I made the decision that I made.

It sound like right now - you are doing everything that you can. Good luck with the vet tomorrow!

Here is Bluebell when she first got sick. I brought her in right away so the rest didn't catch it.

Here is Bluebell feeling much better! As soon as I let her out of her cage in the morning - she runs straight for my youngest who has been sleeping on the floor near her.
