Hi! I am a chicken newbie...got my first 10 little chicks last Wednesday from TSC. :-) BUT...yesterday when checking them out I noticed that my smallest Bantam had what seemed like a snotty nose. I put him back and put the heat lamp closer to the chicks thinking that he/she may have just been chilled since the weather got kind of chilly yesterday. Throughout the day he kept scratching at his head and his head was wet. He was still eating and drinking, so I figured he was ok. I checked on him several times through the day and evening and he seemed ok. Also checked this morning and seemed ok. Then today when I got home from work I went to check on him. He was still drinking and walking ok (although a little unsteady) but now his whole head and front of him was wet. When I picked him up to check him for pick marks, clogged vents, etc, there was nothing. But from what seemed like out of nowhere, this huge stream of clear mucus came stringing from what appeared to be his mouth maybe??? It stretched the whole length of his body to the floor of the brooder when I put him back in there. He promptly wiped it off, got some of it on him (which now makes sense as to why he is wet on his front side) and went to go sit down. I checked my chicken book and can't figure out what is wrong with him. All my other chicks are growing fine and appear to be very healthy. This one is growing very slowly, although he was small from the get go, but otherwise he is developing feathers and everything like the rest of them. Anyone have any clue what is wrong with him/her? Do I need to keep him/her away from the others? TIA for any help!!! He/She is my favorite chick and I don't want to loose it!!! :-(

I would keep her separated from the others and try to save her that way. give her some electrolyte solution in her water, sounds like it might be a respiratory problem. hope someone can give you better advice. good luck
