I picked up a couple of chicks at Rural King a day ago and my lavender orpingtons are struggling. I lost one yesterday and am trying hard to save the other. She seems very weak, spends most of her time resting flat on her stomach, vent appears clean, and I've seen her open mouthed breathing a few times. I'm syringe feeding her water with amprolium and dissolved chick starter. She had appeared a bit perkier last night, but I'm afraid I'm losing her now. Any ideas what's wrong or suggestions on how to help would be appreciated!

I'm so sorry for your loss. :hugs It's always hard to lose the little ones. It's hard to say what was wrong, I think you did as much as you could. Sometimes it's just the stress of being shipped and moved. When I have a weak or struggling chick, this thread is basically how I treat them (so you will have it in the future):

Sometimes they make it, sometimes they do not, it's hard to know what's going on when they are so small.

Thank you for posting this! I'll definitely refer to it again if I have any more sick babies.
