My BR chicks are almost 2 weeks old and one of them is acting funny.
She doesn't run away like the others, doesn't seem to be eating today, and isn't moving around much. She is standing still and sleeping, even when I set her right next to the feeder. When I picked her up, she just sat and slept in my hand and didn't cheep or flap around at all.

ETA- sorry if this is in the wrong forum section.

Not this evening. Won't even eat or drink if I put her right next to the food and water. Right now she's snuggling with all the other chicks and is sleeping.

One of mine is doing this, she went about 2 days of no food or water and had fluid in her crop. I noticed she is the same size as the chicks a week younger than her though she is just as feathered as the other 3wo. She didnt like laying down as the fluid seemed to come up so she would have to swallow. She has always been runty looking so figured it was the end but I felt bad so by day 3 gave her two drops of poly-vi-sol and about 2 cc of water mixed with Karo syrup. Got her through that day but the next I made a scrambled egg and used competition against her 4 other buddies to entice her to take a bite or two. By end of day she was considerably perkier. Today she ate quite a bit of scrambled egg in the am then pm. Sleeps with the others again, not off by herself. Drinks on her own though still not frequently and I've notice her pecking at the food though don't think she is eating all that much yet. Small improvement but better. Gave her some polyvisol again the second day too.

So not sure if any of this will be of help to you but the scrambled eggs sure seem to help. Was hard to get her to eat at first but a few bites are a start. Oh and I gave her some plain yogurt today too. She wasn't a fan of it though.

I always have a couple die out of 50.

"They do not flourish" is the term.
For some reason, one or two will not be vigorous and eat, drink and run.
It is related to the brain of the chick I think.

I'm sorry and hope that you can get them going.
I dip their beaks in fresh water, try sugar water, check that their butt isint plastered shut... THAT will kill babys.
But force feeding to save her and all will not change the chicks brain.

If the chick is unwilling to eat and play, part of the chick left already. Checked out.

I've had a few cases that I couldn't explain.... Like the perfect healthy chick lays down for her friends to walk on her.

At that point I respect her choice.

She chose to die.

Maybe heaven is so great that these little things have a memory of the good things in the afterlife?

For certain, once a chick gives up, it is not up to you.

I wish I could save all my babys.

It is up to them.

God bless you and your chicks..

We have a question is well. We just started raising chickens And our baby checks are now dying in our brooder They are between two weeks and three weeks old most of them We grew through couple of them were bought from the store so we not quite sure why they are dying. This past week we have lost one chicken a day but this morning it looks like were going to lose three. Any information or ideas for us to try we would appreciate our chickens are banams and we have bought from the store six full-size chickens that we want to used for making our own eggs but we lost three of those six. Thanks:(

Some chicks just are not healthy right from the start. But if chicks start dying one by one,you have a problem. Possibly chicks may have Coccidiosis(cocci),it acts quickly and kills fast. Chicks may or may not have blood in poop, runny poop, tired, fluffed and just general ill looking. Treatment is Corid if using Corid Powder 1/2 tsp per gallon. if using Liquid 2 tsp (9.5cc) per gallon. All chicks have to be treated, keep brooder clean and dry,feed/water clean and dry. Cocci is a parasitic infection of the intestinal tract, and very common for chicks to get it. Check the forum under emergency/diseases/cures there is lot's of info about cocci. Hope this helps. Medicated chick feed Does Not prevent cocci.

now there's a second one. wings drooping, breathing hard, sleeping a lot.
I quarantined them and got them to drink a bit of water with ACV.
DH did some research and suspects poultry bronchitis.
I think next I'll try the scrambled egg.

I'm surprised no one brought this up earlier. I've had such healthy chicks, every day on this site I'm reminded how lucky I've been.

Is there a clicking sound in their chests? I've had a chick with that and breathing hard and then noticed another breathing hard so started then all on duramycin and after 8 days of powder in their water everyone was fine. That was a different batch than the chick in my previous post though.
