Hello,

I got chicks yesterday, some from a fleet farm and some got brought home from I believe a runnings. There’s one chick in particular, an Appenzeller Spitzhauben pullet that is acting strange. She cheeps louder than the other 10 chicks combined and constantly, but she doesn’t usually go over and snuggle with them. However, when I pick her up and hold her against me, she stops cheeping instantly and falls asleep. Also whenever i set her back down in the brooder, she seems to stumble backwards as if trying not to fall over but I’ve never seen a chick stand/walk like that before. Is she just normal or could there be a problem?

Do you have any Nutra Drench or Poultry Cell liquid vitamins? She may need a vitamin boost. If you have either, use an eyedropper to the right side of her beak (her right) and see if you can get her to drink a few drops.

You can also put that in their water for one day, fresh the next, then again the next. I wouldn't over do it more than that as they can get diarrhea from the vitamins.

Is the temp around 90-95 in their brooder? She may also be cold. If day old or so, that's about where it should be now, then down 5 degrees per week. Make sure they have room to get away from it too so they don't get too hot.

I don’t have anything for a vitamin boost but I could find some. I’ve never needed it before but it may be time! I keep my chicks inside my house in a clear tote bin so I don’t use a heat lamp. I know everyone says they need one the first little while but in around 15 of having chicks, I’ve only ever used one a couple times when they were outside. 🤷‍♀️ I would assume she would wander over to the other chicks if she was cold but maybe not.

A 70F degree house with no other source of heat for baby chicks is too cold. You've gotten by lucky as usually they either die or get sick.

They usually do go pile on each other when they're cold, so why she's not, then falls asleep against you, is a little unusual. You're 98F or so, so that's why I guessed she was cold.
