Sick chick

Wholesome harvest
If I am not mistaken that is a whole grain feed not a pellet or a crumble? If so are you soaking it into a mash? The powdery substance on whole grain feeds is where the vitamins are. If you do not wet them down to a mash it’s not uncommon for chickens to start to suffer from nutritional deficiencies. Especially when you have some who only pick out the grains they like.

That sounds like a good idea to wet the feed, since the feed seems like a “scratch and peck type” feed. I tried one once, and my chickens would ignore the powdery part and pick out the favorite seeds. I prefer a homogenous crumble or pellet feed in which every bite is the same. Less chances of a deficiency.

Mabel has turned the corner! She is up, drinking, and eating. Still giving mashed food and vitamins. Looks like her old self. Hopefully none of the others will catch whatever this was.

She has been inside the garage for a few days and in the basement for the past 2 days. It is in the 30s today.

I would personally keep her in longer just to make sure she is fully recovered and strong. If she isn’t completely well again when you put her in the cold it might regress her. And just a warning, all of my sick chickens always made amazing recovery right before they died. It is pretty common. I am not saying that is what is happening, I just don’t want it to catch you off guard if it does happen.

We plan to keep her in while she is getting better. We still have to make sure the other ones are good too. We are trying to stay positive, but thank you for that reality.

That’s good! I’m sorry if that was harsh, I just want you to know. It broke my heart when I thought one of mine was better and then she just died.
